Good news and bad news for Room 26

Week 8

Good news!
Another busy week is beginning! We took our swan plants home today. Make sure you put them somewhere sunny with lots of water and you might attract a Monarch Butterfly!
Homework this week is all about preparing for Outdoor education and practising our songs for the Christmas show in Week 10.
Room 26 are super happy with their certificate from Pet Day. We won a certificate in the recycles pets competition, for our 'crazy caterpillars!


Bad news!
Sadly, 10 of our class tadpoles died over the weekend. room 26 are feeling sad about this. We think the tadpoles might have got sick from the grass we picked them, which might have had weed killer on it. We have one lovely tadpole left, so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Good bye Francis!

Francis our lovely Bible in Schools Teacher had her last session with us before Christmas. We listened to the Christmas story from the Bible and acted out the parts. Can you guess who we all are??

Congratulations on an awesome assembly children! You were all wonderful and did very well to learn so much in such a short space of time. Thanks to all the Mums and Dads that helped with learning lines!

This week will not be quite as hectic, but we are still a busy wee class! Swimming continues on Wednesday and Friday. We will be welcoming some small, wiggly creatures into our classroom for the rest of term this week. It will be interesting to watch them change and grow. I wonder if you can guess what they are?

Also this week we will start a 3 week Maths rotation afternoon. All the Year 1 and New Entrant classes will get the opportunity to visit all the other classes in our junior block and take part in fun maths games and activities. We will be learning more about the maths strands including, shape, rotation, weight, length, area and money. Get your maths brains on children!


Keep watching the growth of our seeds too! The sunflowers are starting to come up and we are waiting expectantly for the Swan plants.

We have been learning about using money this week, recognising coins, and how to add up coins. Ask your child if they know what coins you need to buy different things with. What coins could you use to buy an apple? What coins do you need for the newspaper?

Hannah M's mystery object was........an ice-cream scoop! She said " My object is smooth and is made from metal. It is silvery grey with a bit of a bend in it. You find it in the kitchen and use it to help you with ice-cream". Great clues Hannah!

Welcome back!

Week 2

Hello Children and Parents! Welcome back to Term 4. I know you have had a great start to Term 4 with Mrs Collins, whilst I have been in England visiting my family. Here are a few links to things we will be learning about this week!

Miss Stephenson has bought us a gift from England! It's a book called 'Paddington at the Palace' by Michael Bond. It's a story about a Bear visiting the Queen in London. We will be using this book for reading and writing this week and to help us learn more about sketching in Art. Room 26's big question for this term is 'What are life cycles?'. This week we will start off by learning more about plants and growing our own seeds, including mustard seeds and sunflowers. Opposite words and Bully!

Tuesday 21st September
We had a great learning session on opposite words! we learnt that opposites are words with very different meanings. Can you catch out your Mum and Dad?!...

This afternoon we went to watch the Year 5 and 6 production. It was called Bully! Ask your child what their favourite part was.
Remember that its the Junior Water sale on Thursday. Room 26 will be making 'Jelly Oceans' to sell. Everything at the sale will cost 50 cents and the money goes to other schools in Christchurch who have had problems with water after the big earthquake. If you have any old toys or books that you no longer use, please send them to Room 7 for the sale.

We could not believe the amazing weather we saw today!Snow, hail, rain and sunshine in one day. Unfortunately our Cross country day had to be postponed until next term. We have decided to keep up our training and look forward to cross country after the holidays. However, we did get to have a great time participating in Jump Jam in the hall. Here are some photos of us getting groovy!

Tangaroa's Gift

Today we read the beautiful Maori legend, Tangaroa's gift This is a legend that describes how the Paua shell came to be so colourful. We wrote some great descriptions of a Paua shell and created some water colour paintings too. Here are some of our descriptions.

Austin: Today Miss Stephenson showed us a Paua shell. It felt smooth and spikey and it was pink, blue and green. It looked like a rainbow and it was beautiful.

Jasper: I looked at the Paua shell. It was red and blue and green.

Benen: A Paua shell looks really beautiful. It's green and it's blue and it cna be any colour in the world. The beach reminds me of a Paua shell. A Paua shell feels like a soft cat. It is so beautiful!

Hannah.W: At the sea lives a colourful Paua shell. It feels rough on the outside and smooth on the inside. It is like a rainbow rock. When they are dead they show their beautifullness.

Friday 9th September

What an exciting, creative and delicious day! As part of our reading this week we created ice cream sundaes that the Giant from our book 'The Giants ice cream' might enjoy. We had to plan our creations and write 3 adjectives to describe them. Then we wrote about our ice creams and of course ate them!! Photos coming soon.

Happy Fathers day! Here is what we think about our Dads.

Hannah. M: " I love my Daddy because he has pens and paper in his office and I can draw on both sides of it".

Morris: " I love my Dad. He owns Alta and gets us lots of T-shirts. he makes me laugh by doing funny things".

Joel: " My Dad is good at chopping wood. He makes lego houses with me and we watch T.V".

Jagan: " I love my Dad because he makes Paper planes, even Concords and he will make them whenever he wants, even at dinner time".

Hannah.W: " I love my Daddy because he helps me in the garden and we pull up weeds together."

Jasper: " I love how my Daddy gets me cardboard so that I can make masks, like Ironman masks".

Carlin:" I love my Daddy. He is good at being in the garden to grow food."

Lottie: " My Dad is great. He gives me hugs and kisses and sometimes I can sleep in his bed. He works for Ray White".

Millie: "I love My Daddy. He lets me paint the new house and build it too."

Austin: " I love my Dad, because he is good at everything. He plays games with me like tackle rugby".

Cody: " I love My Daddy because he will do anything for me, even making the hardest thing in the world".

Homework time! What would you like to see on our Blog?

Which materials are good for waterproofing? Cody thought plastic bags would be successful. Lottie tried metal foil and Hannah used Materials. Joel found that coating cardboard in oil is quite a good waterproofer, as the water ran off the cardboard. We all agreed that material was not very good but plastic and metal were both useful at waterproofing.

Thursday!
Library day! Well done to everyone who remembered their books.

Developmental started today. The Year 1's and New Entrants are rotating around the classrooms to explore different water experiments. Do you know how to make soemthing that is liquid and solid at the same time? Whats the best thing to waterproof a box with? Which shape boat will float the best? Watch this space for answers....!

Wednesday 25th

Today we had a visit from John, Hannahs Dad. He read us the 'Gruffalo's child'. We loved the interesting voices he used.

We wrote a recount about Alpine Aqualand and tried to use interesting adjectives(other than fun!) to describe our visit. Thanks to all teh Mums and Dads who helped out with our trip!

Week 5

Thursday: We made popcorn to help us estimate the volume of different containers! We managed to fill a 2 litre tub full of popcorn. Everyone enjoyed eating the 'maths' afterwards.

Friday: A special very well behaved visitor came to visit us at news time! Tess Finnigan the sheepdog came to hang out and be patted by us all. Morris showed us all her cool tricks like sitting, dancing and kissing! Morris also gave us lots of information about his light sabres.

Joel is an author! Joel made a great book today and read it to his reading group. Top job Joel!






As part of our water unit, we kept a record of the weather this week and read some poems about weather too. Here we are with our poems and weather chart.

Friday 13th August

Writing: We created our own water music and poetry using interesting adjectives and buckets to keep the beat and create watery noises! Daniel won the neat award for forming all his letters correctly.

Congratulations to Benjamin and Carlin for their class awards. A BIG congratulations to Giselle for getting a special 'Deputy Principals' award for being caring. You set such a good example for all the other children at QPS.

Maori: We have been learning our maori colours this week. Can you remember what colour your house/whare is children??

Mums and Dads.... Please check that your child has given you their letter they have written you about saving water. They have heaps of good ideas in them for saving water.

Tuesday 10th

Today we learnt how to write a description or character profile. We brainstormed lots of adjectives/describing words to describe Gwen the Pukeko.

We learnt some more about capacity in maths too, sorting and testing objects that could and couldn't hold 1 litre.

Monday 9th August

Today Simon from Wanaka Wasterbuters came into to talk to us about water. We made our own water cycle for the classroom(on the window sill), helped with a 'river story' in a bottle and found out how much clean drinking water is in the world.

In Maths we learnt about capacity by measuring out the 3 bears breakfasts!

What a great day.....We also managed to care for the environment by bringing NO GLADWRAP to school this week! Well done Room 26. As a reward Miss Read from the senior school brought us Jelly in recyclable pots. Yummy!

Friday 6th August

What a busy day! We started out with some very interesting news. Millie showed us her 'Hello Kitty' stickers, Morris had a great deal of 'Smiggle' stationary to show us, Hannah.W introduced us to her giant Dog and Cody told us how much he was looking forward to the Ranfurly shield rugby match this weekend.

Room 26 worked in groups to build 'pest proof' nests for Gwen the Pukeko from our class book 'The swamp egss' by Jo Windsor. The Children created some fab designs. Have a look!
